High-Level Lao-Malaysia Business Forum

Our President Martin Ang was invited to attend the High-Level Lao-Malaysia Business Forum & Network Dinner, held at the JW Marriott Hotel, Kuala Lumpur, on 27th May 2025 by Mr. Tee Chee Seng, President of the Malaysian Business Chamber of Lao PDR. Our Secretary -General, Ms Mag Ng, and fellow members, Mr. Nathan Chiam of TS Electrical, Ms Yew Peng Fong of SRKK and Ms Karen Fairclough-Ng (MCMTC) were also in attendance.

The forum was organised by the Lao National Chamber of Commerce & Industry (LNCCI) and the Ministry of Planning & Investment Lao PDR, the Ministry of Industry & Commerce, and also private sector partners in Malaysia, i.e. the Machinery & Engineering Industries Federation (MIEF) and Mega First Cooperation Berhad. The guest of honour was His Excellency Mr. Sonexay Siphandone, the Prime Minister of Lao PDR.

The forum provided a valuable platform to explore strategic collaborations in sectors such as infrastructure, energy, tourism, green industry, digital economy and industrial cooperation. Attention was given to transportation and logistics, and industrial development within Lao’s Special Economic Zones (SEZs). Mr Sthabandith Insisiengmay Ph.D, Deputy Minister of Ministry of Planning & Investment, provided an overview of the Economic Outlook and Investment Opportunities in Lao, and Malaysian companies also had the opportunity to present their proposals directly to His Excellency Mr. Sonexay Siphandone. It was indeed quite eye-opening, as His Excellency graciously gave his comments on each of the investment proposals immediately! H.E. Mr. Siphandone was friendly and approachable, and mingled with our captains of industry during the dinner.

The Lao Government shared their commitment to improve the ease-of-doing-business through policy reforms, digital infrastructure and transforming Lao PDR from “land-locked” to a “land-linked country by expanding their connectivity with neighbouring countries such as via the Laos–China Railway and the launch of Vung Ang Port in Vietnam (Laos’s first seaport).

MCMTC looks forward to fostering more long-term partnerships with our associates in Lao PDR. We will be working closely with MBCL and will organize a visit to Lao, particularly to the Savan Park SEZ in Savannakhet and the Vientiane Logistic Park in September 2025.
