Meeting on Expanded SST with Malaysian Institute of Economic Research (MIER) at MIER Office.

MCMTC was invited to share its views and feedback on the potential impact of the Proposed SST expansion on business operations on 5th May 2025 at MIER (Malaysian Institute of Economic Research). MIER is an independent think tank on economic policy. The meeting was chaired by YBhg. Tan Sri Dr. Sulaiman (Executive Director of MIER) with the support of our advisor, Tan Sri Yong Poh Kon (Chairman of Royal Selangor International) and Dato’ Sri T. Subromaniam (former Director General of Customs & Excise).

MCMTC was represented by President Mr. Martin Ang, Hon.President Mr. Callum Chen, Vice Presidents Mr. Patrick Sim & Ms. Lee Pang and Ms. Faith Toh. The Federation of Malaysian Manufacturers (FMM) was also at the meeting. The meeting provided valuable insights from the business leaders gathered. The potential implications of the SST expansion on local industries and businesses are widespread and will drive costs upwards on many levels, driving costs upwards for consumers and potentially pushing many small businesses out of businesses as well. It was agreed by all that the proposed Expansion requires more thought before it is gazetted. The decision was to propose for exemptions on Business-to-Businesses transactions. MIER undertook to conduct a survey, collecting feedback from our stakeholders and submit the findings and proposals to the policy makers as soon as possible.

MCMTC remains committed to engage with all stakeholders and policymakers, ensuring members’ concerns are heard and contributing constructive input to support balanced and sustainable economic growth for Malaysia’s business communities.
