Meeting with TNB

MCMTC Council Members had a productive meeting on 5th March 2025 with TNB’s Chief Retail Officer, Tuan Kamal Arifin, and his team, joined by Datuk Ir. Ts. Shamsul, Chief Regulatory & Stakeholder Management Officer.

Puan Shahannom, Head of Strategy (Retail Division), together with her assistant, delivered a presentation covering tariffs and the Imbalance Cost Pass-Through (ICPT) mechanism. It was clarified that the increase in base price is due to the adjustment of the reference fuel price, which is currently covered under the ICPT. There will be no further changes until July 2025, as discussions with the Government (PETRA and Suruhanjaya Tenaga) are still ongoing.

Key takeaways from the session:

  1. 70% of electricity costs are non-controllable, mainly due to fuel (coal and gas), which are global commodities.
  2. The remaining 30% covers OPEX and CAPEX, which are closely scrutinised by the Government.
  3. There is no limit on solar power installation, businesses are encouraged to refer to the self-consumption guidelines available on the TNB website.
  4. Companies can still subscribe to the Green Electricity Tariff (GET).

MCMTC will continue engaging with TNB on updates.
